Heat Pump Operation

Here’s how a heat pump generally operates:

Heat Source: Heat pumps can extract heat from various sources, such as the air, ground, or water. The source is often referred to as the “heat source.”

Heat Absorption: In heating mode, the heat pump’s refrigerant evaporates at the heat source, absorbing heat from it. This refrigerant is a substance with a low boiling point, allowing it to absorb heat energy easily.

Compression: The heat pump’s compressor then increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas, making it even hotter.

Heat Release: The hot, pressurized gas is then circulated to the heat distribution system, where it releases heat into the desired space or water.

Heat Rejection: In cooling mode, the process is reversed. The heat pump extracts heat from the indoor space and releases it to the outdoors, effectively cooling the indoor environment.

There are several types of heat pumps, including air source heat pumps (ASHP), ground source heat pumps (GSHP or geothermal heat pumps), and water source heat pumps.
